to the HP nerd world at large that at this point in time, when Fantastic Beasts takes place, Grindlewald is in possession of the elder wand. This is why he was pretty much impervious to all spells. Also a reminder: Newt Scamander overpowered him & Tina used accio on on his wand(? Fact check needed) Either way the elder wand has a new master, and this could contribute to a significant reduction of Grindlewald’s power, allowing for him to be defeated in the imminent battle between him and Dumbledore that is definitely going to take place in the course of these movies.
