Detective Conan is my favorite thing to watch because sometimes it’s like “I killed this person because they abused my sister” but SOMETIMES it’s like “I killed this person because they were a crappy roommate”

I’m not going to lie to you, I have a running record of the best and worst reasons to murder someone that I’ve seen in the show.

The best reason has some contenders but I think the winner is in Vampire Villa (Episode 88-89) where the killer killed the victim because the victim had the killer be his ghost writer by promising to treat the killer’s deathly ill sister with the best medicine money could buy in the best hospital money could buy but in reality the victim was paying the doctor to just give the sister pain killers instead of actually treating the disease that eventually killed her. The victim didn’t tell the killer the sister even died and when he found out on his own he killed him.

The worst reason is actually a three-way tie for me because they’re all so fucking ridiculous. One is in Footsteps of the Hero (Episodes 57-58) where the killer killed one person, his girlfriend, and tried to kill another person because the original person he killed and the person he tried to kill co-wrote a book about Irene Adler in which she was mocking Holmes’ incorrect deductions and essentially the killer killed them because he didn’t agree with the characterization of Irene. (His girlfriend was basically collateral.) The second is in Triple Terror (Episode 72) where Sonoko’s sister’s fiancé killed his father because the fiancé wanted to be a famous writer but didn’t have any material to write about so the father had to die so he could draw inspiration from his real life events and write a legendary novel. And finally there’s The Truth of The Exploding Car Case (Episodes 150-151) where the killer tried to kill his wife because he was dating her younger sister and he wanted to collect his wife’s life insurance money to build the beauty store her little sister wanted to open.

The lesson? This show is either super dark or super ridiculous and there is no in between.
