So I rebloged this article about how he notion of “appropriate play” is harmful to autistic kids and it reminded me of something that’s been bothering me for a while. As a kid I’d read through these diagnosis books my parents had and when they were listing symptoms there were things like “innaprorpiate play with toys”. I feel like people go out of their way to make autistic behaviors sound as bad as possible. Like, you’re gonna make a kid feel bad for playing with a toy the “wrong” way? Who cares! They’re kids! Let them play how they want!

Honestly when I hear the phrase inappropriate play with toys all I can think of is that x-ray of a Buzz lightyear toy shoved up someone’s rectum not autistic kids playing their toys in ways they enjoy.
