It’s completely wild that a therapy exists that essentially poisons autistic children with vitamin c so that they get sick to their stomachs and therefore relieving themselves of their autism… What’s even more unbelievable is that it’s called CEASE therapy aka Complete Elimination of Autistic Spectrum Expressions and that people actually believe in their “theories.”
These CEASE therapists only undergo 3-5 day long training sessions before becoming a CEASE therapist. These therapists tell parents vaccines, toxins, microwaves, sugar, and various other day to day items are the cause of autism. Even after the proof of vaccines not causing autism they still cling to the harmful myth recommending parents not to vaccinate their children.
Additionally, according to Dr. Tinus Smits’ “personal theory and experience” autism is developed or caught from chemicals, food, and environmental factors often and most frequently after birth. Autism has been proven to be something people are born with and not something you can get rid of or catch. Autism is present in a child long before traits begin to surface. A child often doesn’t show visual traits or signs of autism until they enter the typical period of speech and social development.
CEASE therapy claims detoxing the child and keeping them away from metal pans and processed foods will cure autism and make autistic kids more social, more willing to make eye contact, and healthier overall… When in reality the child’s ‘change’ in autistic traits is likely because they are in excruciating stomach pain with little to no energy. Also, it’s most likely the child is afraid not to comply or else they’ll be made violently sick again.
There are over 500 CEASE therapists in 47 countries around the world. In the United States there are 124 and over 120 in the United Kingdom.
While this isn’t the most popular harmful therapy used on autistic children it is still completely disturbing and affecting people’s lives. Additionally, Autism $peaks supports CEASE therapy and has resources on their website which isn’t surprising considering their track record.
Overall, children can’t just poop out their autism, yet these therapists think that is the case and cure. The phenomenon that any sort of disorder can be expelled from the body is extremely outdated and similar to abusive practices in psychology’s history like trephination (removing pieces of the skull), lobotomies, and the theory humorism. It is unbelievable that therapies like this exist and that people actively think it is beneficial.

also this is not the first time m. night shyamalan has been blatantly ableist towards people with mental illness, and disabilities.
in the sixth sense, it wasn’t directly related to any one mental illness but there was a preoccupation with psychiatric and mental illness and the ~creepiness of it all. in the opening scene, the main character, a psychiatrist, is assaulted in his own home by a previous patient.
in his film the village, there is a character who appears to have a very poorly represented form of autism, and he turns out to be a violent and a villain, and the “scariest” part of the movie.
in the visit, which was released last year, the film dramatized a psychological and neurological phenomenon called “sundowning” which occurs most often in elderly people, where dementia symptoms may be exacerbated by fall of night; the “monsters” in the film were in fact an older couple whose sundowning prompted them to become violent.
and now of course, there’s split, which unapologetically turns people with dissociative identity disorder into dangerous murderers. from the trailer, it also draws on any other “scary” mental illness or symptom to make it even more thrilling for neurotypical people.
m. night shyamalan is a persistent and blatant ableist. his films rely heavily on the stigmatized of mental illness, psychiatry, and disability. he profits off of the oppression of mentally ill people.
(please reblog if you can)
I saw a mini-special with him while I was watching another movie on the SyFy channel. The spot was only a minute or so long, but he was talking about how when he first heard of Disassociative Identity Disorder he couldn’t wait to make a fucking movie about it. He was so proud of himself. And then James McAvoy talked about how exciting it was to stretch his acting muscles by playing different characters all at once.
As far as I’m concerned, fuck this movie and fuck everyone associated with it.

If you’re an NT, it’s ok to reblog this too!! [ just don’t say anything nasty in the tags. I’m watching ]
please be aware of all the ways autistic people are actively dehumanized, including
-acting like it would be better off for everyone if we didn’t exist
-being trained to obey, and punished for saying no
-using ‘worked with children with autism’ in a similar way to ‘worked with dogs’
-assuming we don’t have meaningful friendships that aren’t born of a neurotypical pitying us
-assuming we don’t have romantic relationships
-assuming we don’t have sex drives
-debating if it is ethical to allow autistic kids to be born
-denying the existence of autistic adults
-debating whether it is better to have an autistic child, or risk your child dying of a life-threatening disease
-silencing our voices in conversations about us
-treating us like a science experiment
-comparing autistic people to animals
-using terms like ‘put out of their misery’ when describing our murders
-justifying our abuse and torture
-etc, etc

shoutout to everyone who can’t pass as neurotypical, who get asked to their faces what’s wrong with them, who have had their relationships ruined by their mental illness. to people who have been turned away by professionals because they were deemed “difficult cases.” it is not your fault, the way you are treated does not mean you are bad or broken.
dont talk to disabled people as if theyre children or some kind of pet, literally do not do it.
its not cute or considerate, its not the “right way to talk to them” its honestly disgusting and you shouldnt talk to anyone like theyre less than you.
its patronizing and rude, and if youre talking to them like that because theyre disabled, whether it be mentally, physically or chronically, its not only wrong, but incredibly ablest as well.
when neurotypicals say “use your words”, they mean “use my words.”
“Your autism is not an excuse to do that!!1!1!”
And meanwhile, there are parents out there who are still using autism as an excuse to not vaccinate their children.
