Somehow in 2018, men still feel entitled to tell women to smile, even while speaking on the record. Greg Rickford, the PC MPP for Kenora-Rainy River, interrupted a reporter who was interviewing him today by telling her to smile. The reporter, Marieke Walsh, says he walked away when she later asked him why he told her to smile.

I know the Canadian health care system is flawed but do you have any sources about specific issues of the system?

A few:

-Pharmacare (prescription drugs) is not covered. Canada is the only developed country with a Healthcare system that does not cover drugs for everyone.

-Drugs in Canada are also one of the highest priced. Covering drugs in the healthcare system would fix this.

-Dental care is not covered.

-Vision care is not covered.

-Due to underfunding there are long wait times for particular procedures, and whole areas like mental healthcare.

Also there is a shortage of doctors in many areas of the country, so many Canadians lack a family doctor.

Also:

While Abortion has been legal for some time, access is not guaranteed in Canada.

Outside of major urban areas, its all but impossible to access a health clinic that offers abortion services in much of the country.

And its only last year that the province of Prince Edward Island even allowed abortions to be performed.

Vancouver Beats L.A. As Least Affordable Housing Market In North America

allthecanadianpolitics:

Vancouver is known for being Canada’s most unaffordable real estate market, but according to a new study, the city ranks above all other metro areas across North America too.

Simon Fraser University adjunct professor Andy Yan used 2016 census data to determine the affordability index ratios of major metropolitan areas across Canada and the United States. Yan, who is the director of the Simon Fraser University City Program, determined the top 25 unaffordable housing markets by comparing a city’s median home prices to median household incomes.

Greater Vancouver took the top spot for the worst housing affordability with a ratio of 11. This means the median home price of $800,220 is 11 times the median household income of $72,662.

Los Angeles and San Jose followed Vancouver with a ratio of 8.8 and 8.3, respectively.

Crowdfund the The Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women Database

eveningstarwoman:

Hi friends–as some of you already know, I’ve been building a database of MMIW cases in the US and Canada for the last three years. I’m doing archival research now, which includes records requests to law enforcement agencies. I’m using MuckRock to streamline that process, and could really use your help! For as little as $3, you can make a big difference in helping us to research this issue. There’s more info at the link, but here’s a summary for the campaign:

Indigenous women experience exponentially higher rates of violence, which often goes unaccounted for. The MMIW Database seeks to fill these gaps in data by logging cases of missing and murdered indigenous women, girls, and two spirit people. Help us do this work by supporting our records request campaign–you can make a difference with as little as $3! All donations will be used to cover the costs of records requests to law enforcement and government agencies for MMIW case data–we pay MuckRock $3 per request for their services in helping us to file these requests (it’s a mess, and their help really streamlines the process!), and in addition to that, sometimes agencies will ask us to pay for the time and labor it takes for them to pull and scan these records. Your donation will go straight to MuckRock, to help cover these costs. If we reach our goal of $1500, that will pay for over 400 new records requests! We are submitting requests to tribal, city, county, state, and federal law enforcement, as well as correctional facilities (for deaths in custody), so we have a long way to go, but we can get there with your help.
